In therapy, just like everything else in life, Knowledge is Power!
Feminist Therapist’s Book List for Unpacking Patriarchy
What you are paying for in this curated list is me ditching the books that don’t hold up to psychological and sociological scrutiny, so you don’t have to waste your money on fluffy “girl-boss” packaged books that are neither helpful nor relevant.
Women’s mental health is inextricably linked to the societal pressures we deal with as we exist under patriarchy. The most important tool we have is being as aware as possible about what patriarchy means and how it impacts us. This book list includes nonfiction, novels, and biographies. Sociological, psychological, and historical data are all part of them. Enjoy!
I only recommend books that I’ve read and genuinely feel are important and could make a difference. I will never recommend a book that I would not genuinely recommend to one of my therapy clients. Start with what feels most pertinent to you by reading each book’s description online.
Of course, you don’t have to read every single book on this very long list, but I wanted to include as much variety as possible. If feminist reading is completely new to you, I would start with the short and perfect “ We Should All Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which you may recognize as the spoken word piece in Beyoncé’s “Flawless”!
